Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle
An impregnable citadel standing through the centuries
About This Site
Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle is one of Ukraine's oldest and most prominent fortresses, located on a rocky peninsula surrounded by the Smotrych River canyon.
Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle is a unique monument of defensive architecture combining elements from different epochs and cultures. Founded in the 14th century, the fortress occupies a strategically important location on a rocky peninsula surrounded on three sides by the Smotrych River canyon. Over the centuries, the castle was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded. The fortress complex consists of the Old and New Castles connected by defensive walls and towers. Seven of the original 12 towers have been preserved. The castle was the center of numerous historical events: battles with Tatar hordes, Turkish armies, and Cossack rebels took place here.
Historical Significance
The first written mentions of the castle date to 1374. Archaeological excavations proved that fortifications existed on this site as early as the 12th-13th centuries. In 1672, after a prolonged siege, the castle was captured by the Turks led by Sultan Mehmed IV. From the 18th century, the castle was used as a prison. In 1928, the castle was declared a historical-cultural preserve.
Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle is a unique monument of defensive architecture. In 2007, by popular vote, the castle was recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine.
