Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is an outstanding architectural monument and spiritual center of Ukraine, founded in 1051. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.
Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is one of the oldest and most revered Orthodox monasteries in Ukraine and Eastern Europe. Founded in 1051 by monks Anthony and Theodosius, the Lavra is located on the picturesque slopes of the right bank of the Dnipro River. The architectural ensemble was formed over many centuries in organic combination with the landscape. The complex includes unique surface and underground structures from the 11th to 19th centuries, a system of cave labyrinths totaling over 600 meters, and domestic buildings. Main monuments: Dormition Cathedral, Trinity Gate Church, Great Lavra Bell Tower, Refectory Church, defensive walls with towers, cave complexes of Near and Far Caves.
Historical Significance
The monastery was founded in 1051 by Saints Anthony and Theodosius of the Caves. For centuries, the Lavra was an important spiritual and cultural center that made a significant contribution to the development of education, art, and medicine. The spiritual and intellectual influence of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra contributed to the spread of Orthodox faith and thought in the Russian world in the 17th-19th centuries.
