L'viv Historic Centre
Medieval pearl with European charm
About This Site
L'viv Historic Centre - UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. Founded in late Middle Ages, the city preserved its medieval topography and magnificent Baroque buildings.
The city of L'viv, founded in the late Middle Ages, flourished for several centuries as an administrative, religious and commercial centre. The medieval urban topography has been preserved virtually intact, along with evidence of the different ethnic communities who lived there. The political and commercial role of L'viv attracted Ukrainian, Armenian, Jewish, German, Polish, Italian and Hungarian groups. Because of their different cultural and religious traditions, they settled separately from each other but were interdependent. The result is a modern cityscape with architectural and artistic masterpieces in which Eastern European traditions merge with German and Italian.
